Default Explosive Device Detonated in Nederland Shopping Center

I totally missed this one. Then again, I was in Boulder most of the day having a tooth pulled.

Investigators believe explosive device found at Nederland shopping center

The Boulder County Bomb Squad was confident that a device found inside a backpack outside the Nederland Police Department on Tuesday morning that prompted an evacuation of a shopping center had the capacity to be explosive.
"They are proceeding down that line with all due caution to make sure it is safe," Nederland Town Marshal Paul Carrill said.
The Caribou Ridge Shopping Center was closed all day Tuesday and remained evacuated as of 9 p.m., and two bomb squad robots were examining the backpack and its contents in the parking lot. The police department is located at the shopping center.
Carrill said a Nederland police officer coming in for the day shift at about 7 or 7:30 a.m. found the backpack and brought it inside the department after assuming it had been lost or abandoned — something that happens frequently.
"After he began inspecting the bag to determine ownership, he saw items consistent with items that may or may not be used for an explosive device," Carrill said.
He said the police department and the shopping center was evacuated and the bomb squad was called out. The bomb squad X-rayed the backpack twice inside the department before removing it from the building.
As of 9 p.m., officers with the bomb squad were using robots to X-ray a solid block found inside the backpack in an effort to identify what it was and how to dispose of it safely, be that detonating it on-site or taking it to another location, Carrill said.
He added that the bomb squad was "systematically dissecting" items in the backpack and had removed evidence that had been sent off for lab testing on Tuesday, although the results of the tests might not be available for weeks.
"Once they brought it out, two robots removed the contents in the parking lot," he said. "Items have been taken for analysis."
Carrill said that the incident has become a joint investigation between his department, the Boulder County District Attorney, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, the bomb squad, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Nederland Fire Protection District and the Boulder County hazmat team.
The Boulder Emergency Squad was also on scene.
"They are probably still several hours away from buttoning this up," he said at about 9 p.m.

WTF does that even mean?? So, the officer saw items in the backpack, and because these items looked like other items, but he didn't know if the items the items looked like could or could not be used to make a bomb, so we better call the bomb squad?

A local said there was a mason jar filled with "something" and it had nails, etc. sticking out of it. It was also connected to a cell phone with some wires.

This is unconfirmed, but it would make me need a change of shorts if I found it.

Well, we need a law against this kind of stuff or it will keep happening.

Maybe even restrict the number of nails that can be bought at one time and start checking IDs for jar (kids don't need jars).
