    Mexicans are soooo scary.

I worked down there for a couple months. I went out to eat every single night, ran in the evenings on their trail systems, worked in a hospital. I never felt unsafe. There is decent food around, but little to no night life or happenings. A few breweries have opened and have decent beer. There is plenty of hiking around (obviously not on the scale of 14ers here) and White Sand park isn't far away.

As others have said, El Paso is a shit hole, but where you would be going if you're flying places.

Seems to be a recurring theme around here about anyone that isn't pure white.

And, yes, El Paso has gone to hell.

First, there is no such thing as pure white. Second, this post is soliciting information about living in Las Cruces. Do not turn it into a discussion of race or racism, or whatever bug happens to be bothering you today. Third, if you do not like it around here, please either work hard to make it better or leave.

    Consider that your warning.

To be fair, I was the third to point it out, but your house / your rules.

To get to the El Paso airport, you can bypass the city. Forget the name of the road, but you can cut across north of town.

Forget the name, but the one that goes over the mountain? Much nicer drive.

Trans mountain road, you turn off at Canutillo. I remembered it on my drive home. Yes, a very nice drive.

My mom grew up in Las Cruces and we still have family there. Last time I was there I was just a little kid, but she says as long as you don't mind the desert atmosphere and being an hour from the border you should feel at home. She says to visit La Posta in old Messia for some most excellent mexican food. Also you're not far from Hatch, so hope you enjoy good chiles. And of course there's always the good times you can have in Juarez...just don't drive your car.

I don't know much about the city itself but for a couple of good restaurants (which I conveniently don't know the names of either), as I only make it down that way for 3-4 days every couple/few years, but...

White Sands Missile Range hosts the most fun endurance event I've ever participated in. It's called "The Bataan Memorial Death March", and, if you like meeting great people and long walks in the desert it's worth checking out. For a real good time go "heavy".
