Default Need help with a new dog

So my daughter really wants another dog since our oldest Labrador passed away 5 months ago. We live out on 5 acres with another lab and a medium size hound dog that rules the roost. They have a large sun room to get out of the cold but have a lot of steps to get up to it.

So here is the question. She really wants a dachshund which I think is a little to small for our living conditions. I would like some suggestions for a different dog that would fill her wants and still be able to handle the living conditions. We will be adopting whatever dog we settle on either from a local shelter or breed rescue. I have told her to research dogs but she still keeps coming back to the dachshund.

    Thanks for the help

CORGI or Jack Russell if you want small.

Both are great. We've had 7 Jacks since 94. All have been great, great dogs. But a word of caution...you have to really like dogs to live with a JRT. A confident JRT will run the house if you don't stay on top of them and most of them are VERY high energy. And they stay high energy for most of their lives.

We lost our little Corgi a few years back to kidney disease and I've been looking for a Corgi pup for months now. They are really hard to find.

ETA: I grew up with several dachsunds, too. Loved 'em all.

But I'm kind of on the same page as Irving...let her pick what she wants. But I would encourage her to try to find one at a shelter.

I have both and love both. Warning they both are stubborn (the jack More so) so start researching on the clicker training method or likewise. Training a JRT is no joke but if you do it right you can end up with a hell of a smart dog and loyal companion.

I would also like a dog that could play with the lab.

I'd maybe remind her if you are rural, coyotes and for a dachshund, even eagle/hawk may get the dog if not kept indoors.

We have had neighbors with Dachshunds, Three out of three had screwed up backs with nerve damage as they got older.
