To each their own, but straight bars seem like they would be pretty uncomfortable.

But, like I said, to each their own. Maybe that will work for you.

This carries over from Mt. biking. With elbows out, only the the outer part of the palm is connecting with the bar. This is causing my fingers to go numb.

I'm dealing with some numbness myself. Mine is more about wrist angles I think. Going to be swapping my bars to something different in the near future myself.

If you haven't tried already, you might get away with rotating the bars you have either forward or back and see if that helps out any.

I think you should put some 16" ape hangers on it. You know, for a nice, upright seating position.

Those aren't ape hangers, they're part of a recycled jungle gym....

Look into Rox Risers. You can adjust them in all kinds of positions forward and back, as well as getting the height you are looking for.
Regarding lowering the rear. You also need to adjust the front tubes in the tripple clamps. If not, you are going to have some strange handling. Even dangerous if you are going at any rate of speed. Do some google foo about the SAG of a dirt bike.

Eh. Not any worse in the handling department than riding double with a fat chick. Plus, you can only drop the tubes in the clamps so far before they hit the handlebars.

I saw a guy on Powers a few months ago with handlebars not too far from those, AND a hand shifter. Looked like a ridiculous way to ride.
