Default PA Corrections Officer dies after fall

Didn't see this one until today

Corrections Officer David Weaver succumbed to injuries sustained nine days earlier when he fell and struck his head at State Correctional Institute Graterford.

He was supervising inmates in the prison's outdoor recreation yard when he fell backwards and struck his head on a concrete wall, causing a skull fracture. Officer Weaver was the only officer assigned to the recreation yard at the time. Inmates who witnessed the incident stated that Officer Weaver was attempting to avoid a football that had been thrown in the yard.

Officer Weaver was transported to Paoli Hospital where he remained until succumbing to his injuries.

Officer Weaver was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections for 13 years. He is survived by his wife.

How terrible! And how very suspicious. Fox 29 conducted an investigation of this event at the request of his widow. This was a maximum-security prison, and yet he was the lone guard in a yard with many inmates. There was no security camera footage, because according to Corrections, there was no camera aimed at the yard.

The Pennsylvania State Police are now looking into it, after Officer Weaver's widow asked them to do so. The Department of Corrections is stating they followed protocol in "having the safety team investigate...a work-related injury," and that they interviewed the witnesses "as soon as possible." However, Tara Weaver said the investigator for the state police told her the inmates weren't interviewed for four days after the incident.

Now the Department of Corrections has altered its stance and has determined Officer Weaver died in the line of duty. How very big of them. I can't imagine but that the State Police's investigation has helped them to change their position a bit.

    RIP, Officer Weaver.
