    Unsure on timeline and definitely unsure on how that all works for officers (or, worked). Wouldn't be surprised if it was potentially some ROTC thing in those early stages.

    Basically sounds like he was able to get into a program which uses needed skills (similar to the Army's AMEDD, Band, etc.) which allows needed people to come in in an otherwise unorthodox manner.
