Default Winter Weather Fun in Lentil-Land

    Part I:

Driving into work it was clear skies until I got to the outskirts of Lewiston. There it was snowing pretty good...for about a mile. Drove right out of it into clear skies again. That's when I realized it was the steam from the Clearwater Paper mill that was causing the very localized snowstorm. I'd estimate for a while this morning it was snowing there at the rate of about 1/2" to 1" per hour. It was near zero this morning and this happens occasionally.

I took the photos from a place in town.

    Looking East:

    Northeast:

    West:

A good view of the snow-making culprit. This is from a hill east of town, looking west:

Later, I drove up to Elk River. There is a LOT of snow up there. This is a road that is heavily traveled by snow machines and it doesn't get plowed. It snows, it gets packed down by traffic. It snows more, gets packed more. You can get an idea of how deeply the snow is packed from looking at the "Yield" and speed limit signs. People who have driveways off this road build snow ramps from the level of the snow down to the level of their plowed driveways. Pretty neat. Elk River is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise.

It's pretty much a recreational (or retirement) area. No jobs...unless you wanna drive a log truck. Population is less than 200 and it's 2 hours from Lewiston and 1.5 hours from Moscow. It's pretty, though.

Lentil-Land? Isn't it Potato Land? (Maybe I'm not getting an inside joke?)

That's what I was thinking, too. Maybe not climate, but localized weather control, at least.

Northern Idaho is known for lentils. I didn't know that either until I moved here. They even have a big Lentil Festival in Moscow every year. Lentils everywhere.

That looks like the pictures my cousin sent me from McCall, another snowy paradise. If you like 4' - 6'+ winters , he says the hunting is very good up north.
