For my old cars I register then all as Horseless carriage, then do the paperwork and install year of manufacture plates on them. All horseless carriage plates in Colorado are on a 5 year cycle and all expire at the same time, so the cost is different depending where in the cycle you get the plates, but the cost is never more than $15.49. Then to swap out to a year of manufacture plate there is no cost involved. I've got 2 cars done like this and about to add a third.
