Beretta 92S thoughts?

I've noticed there are older Beretta 92S pistols everywhere for under $300 right now. I know it has it's shortcomings as most things surplus or European do (small sights, funky mag release location, etc.) but passing on an Italian made Beretta for under $300 is difficult. I've passed on other surplus handguns only to regret it later when the supply runs out and the prices go up.

I have one. Good shooter but I'm bored with it. Comes with (3) mags.

They're great guns, but the mag release is super different than most guns you're used to. Give it a try, but don't expect to be running reload drills right away. The price on them are great though.

I had heard that the newer mags were backwards compatible and had the cut for the S style release.

Besides, this wouldn't be a carry gun or a home defense piece so probably a couple of magazines would be plenty for a dedicated range gun.

The 92S is probably the easiest handgun for anyone to shoot well. If you put an assortment of handguns on a table and let multiple people shoot them all and compare, most can shoot the Beretta well when compared to the others. This is something that I have seen done many times back in the 1990's when law enforcement agencies were choosing replacement issue arms before the military big switch to the m9. Interestingly enough even though they shoot well for most people it was not the choice firearm of most law enforcement agencies.
