Default Post your funniest/most bizarre/scariest Craigslist story...

Since we have a nice thread about Craigslist, I figured that there are probably some other great stories out there.

So let's hear them. The most "WTF?", the most "were you born this stupid?" the most "you expect me to do WHAT?" stories you have.

Ever had someone say "Sure I'll sell you X. Just meet me in the dark alley at midnight, alone, and bring cash." Ever had someone change the price on you at the last minute? Sell an item you drove 400 miles to buy? Try to sell something that is obviously, blatantly "hot?"

    C'mon, let's hear them!

My brother bought a cummins to replace the old motor in his truck, and so we loaded up in my truck, went and looked at it, haggled and closed the deal. We then were loading up the motor, and as soon as the tailgate on my truck was closed, he was gone. Hopped on his bike and took off. We hadn't even gotten back in the truck.

This doesn't necessarily sound strange in and of itself, but the fact that he left the garage door open, the lights on, tools out and on the floor, and the engine crane on the driveway slab.

We didn't have a clue what was going on, so we left, and then as we were talking about it, realized the guy may have not actually been the owner. Long story short, did some checking with local authorities, and posted on CL to see if anyone had a cummins stolen out of their garage.

No one ever came forward, but I'm still not convinced the guy was the actual owner. On the up side, the motor runs well.

Had a motorcycle up for sale, and got offered "special consideration" if I would accept the lowball offer of $1k less than I was asking...

I'm happily married, and not really into random hook ups, so that was a no.

Sold some stuff and got counterfeit bills for it. Went to the bank and got to explain why I was "trying to pass bills". Luckily, I've had the same savings account since I was 5, and quite a bit of the staff knows me, and it didn't go anywhere beyond being out $400 and giving a statement to the "authoritahs"...

Tried to buy a bass guitar from a guy, sent an email asking when we could meet up. I wasn't even going to haggle.

No response. Tried to get in touch with him for 3 days.

Saw he relisted the bass at a lower price, still no response. No phone number, no nothing.

Posted a wanted ad, looking for that specific model of bass, and guess what? Jack hole contacts me saying he has it for sale. Gave me the original price, so I sent an email back saying "thanks, but no thanks", went and found a different bass with someone who actually wanted my money.

Craigslist is a crap shoot. I've gotten some screaming deals on CL, but you have to be willing to weed through the 'tards.

i sold a non-running (fully disclosed) GMC Sierra that I had parked on the street sort-of on the side of a neighbor's corner lot. The guy was sure he could get it running--for a day and two nights there was a crew of mexicans trying to get that dang truck working. I actually considered calling to get it towed at that point, as i was getting the stink-eye from some of my neighbors (to which i replied--it's not my truck--do what you need to do). i still don't know how they got it out of there--running or whether it was towed.

I sold a 2001 ford escape (with a built in stupid fee) to a very nice family. this thing was notorious for eating coils, and they were expensive to replace. it would run, but idle very roughly. they didn't haggle. they didn't negotiate. they just handed over the cash. they didn't take it for a test drive. it was in a garage downtown, so they didn't even see it in the sun. i offered to drive them in it if they didn't want to. no dice. i sorta felt bad about taking the full price

i was selling 3 very-good-shape tires. i figured i'd sell 2, and get stuck with one. first day, a lady wants one. i actually left a rockies game to meet her (yes, big loss). i do all my meets in a home depot parking lot. she says "i've only got $100 bill"---sorry, i don't make change--don't even take cash with me to an exchange. she goes in and gets change (i think i was asking $70 for the tire)--she sorta did a bit of the grifter hand razz-a-ma-tazz and handed over the money. later, i saw i only had $50 in my pocket

Sold a plasma tv a while back and was offered special consideration multiple times, weed and to donate it for a charity...

Sold a motorcycle and this really short, stocky lady shows up. She can barely touch the ground when she sit on the bike... i tried to advise her that it wouldn't work for her but she insists on a test drive... i get her cash, and make her sign a temporary bill of sale, and she gets on the bike and almost wipe out before the end of my driveway.... i tell her its not a good bike for her, give her back her money. 3 days later she shows up, asking if i could pay for her medicsl expenses since she hurt her ankle on my bike! I pull the BOS where in really small print at the bottom i have all the necessary disclaimers i could imagine... never heard from her again, never sold another bike on CL.

I bought a lap top off Craigslist and one of the guys that I inquired with had a bunch of laptops that were locked and he didn't have the password. Uhh, no thanks dude.

One time I about got into an argument with a lady over whether I had paid her already or not (I talk a lot and get off track). Turns out I hadn't and felt pretty stupid.

she may have the better "funniest/most bizarre/scariest" story from that exchange. "this one time i was selling soiled unmentionables and this guy said he paid me...."

seriously--a secretary in my office would sell her used underwear to the sniffers on CL (and not make any secret about it). would go down the elevator from the office, stand on the street, and someone would drive up and hand her cash. apparently, the gamier the better. extra for menstrual stains.

That's a thing. I've looked into it. There is now a website just for that purpose that isn't even on the dark web. People will send you underwear to wear and everything.

    1. Remove plates when you sell the car. No promises by the buyer they'll bring them back. I had State Patrol call months after selling a car when the buyer didn't return the plates. he never re-registered it and state patrol thought it was stolen.

    2. Some insurance companies cover the car for 30 days after the private sale. FYI. Guy can go smash it and you'll be on the hook insurance wise. (the last I was told anyway)

I've always had good luck selling my cars just by parking them in the driveway 4 sale. High volume corner, mexicans always buy them. Knock on door... TWO EIGHT ZERO ZERO for van? (big roll of cash in his hand) Yep, sold. Didn't even want to go for test drive.

Sold a truck once. 6 Guys pull up in 6 trucks. No plates on any of them. One speaks English, they offer cash and want to know if it will make it to "Mexico tonight". Yup, should get there no problem. Gone. Apparently they load them all onto a 18 wheeler at the Texas border somewhere and haul them across in one batch.

No "crazy" stories though. I did have one guy BOLT in a big hurry once the cash was in his hand. I was slightly scammed, wasn't much money. Lesson learned.

I sold a topper that I had on my truck when I no longer wanted it. I was pretty specific about what type of truck this thing fit. A guy says he wants it and comes by in his truck which is a totally different make and model than the truck I had the topper on. He wanted me to take it off my truck and put it on his to "see if it fits".

Nope. Ain't going to happen. If it comes off my truck and on to yours you just bought it and I don't care if it fits or how it looks.

He actually agreed to my terms, paid me, we swapped it over to his truck, it didn't fit right, he did manage to get it sort of clamped down and off he went.
