    Default Training the nephews

My nephews were visiting this past week since the eldest is considering attending CU-B and their mother requested I take them shooting. The weather wasn't bad Saturday so we spent a good 4 hours or so at Cheyenne Mountain -- gotta hand it to the staff there, they made it easy and pleasant. I started them both on sporter-grade target-style air rifles (reconditioned Daisy 853s from the CMP) and then migrated the older one to .22s.

We continued the training at Whistling Pines yesterday for about 90 minutes. It seems like we've inspired the younger one to try out for his high school's air rifle team (as his parents hoped) so now all I have to do is get one of my air rifles back home to Hawaii and get something set up to continue his training. In researching the laws, I've found one area where Hawaii is better than Colorado or Colorado Springs with respect to firearms. Air rifles and BB guns are considered non-powder firearms and as such, do not require the same onerous controls that actual firearms do. Better, unlike Colorado Springs, Hawaii's only laws about shooting air rifles or BB guns on your own property are that the projectile can't leave your property (as opposed to C Springs' law against firing inside city limits) so they can actually set up a practice range at home by just having 40 feet of clear space and a good backstop.

I've been teaching other people's kids for so long, it felt good to give my own nephews some solid instruction and practice.

Way to go brother. The best way to ensure the legacy of firearms ownership continues is to "pass it on" to our next generation. Job well done!

Believe it or not, several schools had actual rifle teams (3-position smallbore) when I was growing up in Hawaii. When I transferred for my junior year, my new school had a rifle team and I actually got letters for being on it for 2 years. Youngest nephew is attending the school I first attended and the air rifle team is a relatively new thing -- I think they've had one for 5 or 6 years now.
