That is what I always thought. So I went to call 811, it was after hours and not an emergency, so the little recording said to go to their website and enter a ticket. So I did. Before allowing me to enter the ticket, a screen comes up and says (among other things):
I called UNCC today, and was told "We cannot guarantee that the utilities will mark within your property lines. The request can be made, but the individual companies do not have to mark your private lines - and any many cases they wont. You need to have a private locate company mark inside your property lines if you want to make sure they get marked."Many utility companies only mark the location of their lines up to your property boundary. Utility lines inside your property boundaries are called "private lines" or "private facilities" and you are responsible for being sure that the lines inside of your property boundaries are properly marked. There are companies who will mark the lines inside of your property boundaries but they do charge a fee for that service. Please CLICK HERE for a list of private locate companies. The failure to mark lines inside of your property boundaries and the cutting or damage to those lines can result in serious personal injury or death. You will be responsible for any damage to any lines on your property regardless of who marks the lines.
I have a ticket in, with a request to mark down the side of the house and in the back, so we will see what happens.
