Default Seen this on your range targets?

Don't mind the total swiss cheese, after I did a few drills I chose random spots for my range toy followed by trying to dial in a new optic on my rifle.

First time I've seen the swirlies. Range staff all were suprised by it too. Not sure if it's caused by the Glock being fairly dirty, or just after a 100 rounds in fairly quick order the heat getting it to somehow burn maybe more excess powder or otherwise cause it to leave the soot? This is from bent elbo aka hip firing at like 4 feet. Basic blaster blazer.

If I let the glock cool down for a while, it stopped but resumed once I'd fired a few more.

I've never seen this in my life of shooting a variety of weapons. Definitely following to see what others know.

I've seen it several times in close in shooting. It has nothing to do with the gun and it does not indicate a problem with your pistol, nothing to worry about.

It has nothing to do with your gun, other than proximity. I see it all the time with freedom munitions 9mm reloads when doing contact drills inside 3m.

I see that at least once a month. Plated bullets with damage in the plating (thin, too much crimp, cut when hitting the lands, etc.) at close range commonly do that. Some inexpensive FMJs (with exposed lead bases) will do that as well. It is a vaporized lead tail spinning off the lead core. Nothing wrong with the gun at all.

    Breathing vaporized lead is bad.

My Springfield xdm 5.25 9mm does that all the time. Sometimes out to about 5-6 yds.

Carbon build up is my guess. It makes sense it Would make with the swirl pattern (bullet spin) and also why it only does it while the barrel is warm / hot. But I'm not an expert nor play one on TV.

ETA: Should have read up on markco's post.
