Barrel Purchase

I am a newb that is looking to build up an AR-15. I have done some substantial research(for a newb), but am hung up on the barrel. Not necessarely on what I want, but if it's available and in my price range. Fiscally I'm limited to about $300 per phase of my build. What I would like to build is a carbine length 16" barrel, chrome-moly-vanadium, with quad-rails and a flip down sight. I am hung up about barrel twist, but considering I'm leaning towards 62 gr rounds 1:9 is probably optimal. I would prefer to go free float, but it is not necessary. My issue is any of the places I can order from have me select options and I don't want to select an option that will make it harder for me later in my build! Any advice??

Find a good deal on something used, shoot the hell out of it, worry about rails and the flipdown sight later. Don't underestimate the ammo budget!

Your first AR doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to function safely and be fun to shoot.

16inch Moly Chrom barrels with a 1:9 twist Is perfect as there are many barrels built to that spec, and will shoot lighter 45g bullets should u find the need not to want to shoot the more expensive 62g ones, to my knowlege you can free float any barrel it just depends on what gas block you choose to use. The thing with "free Float" isn't the barrel but the rail system thats gonna cost you a arm&leg, Though I've seen some decent "Poly" Free float rail systems that came out as of late, one being magpul.

You may want to check out the kits that Del-Ton offers. They are very reasonably priced and you can customize them to thousands of possible configurations.
