If I can still say anything positive about the military, its that Universities could take some lessons from the military about diversity, race, and putting aside petty differences to focus on the mission.

I enrolled in college just weeks after being released from active duty back in the 80s. Veteran status wasn't such a big deal. The professors seemed to appreciate more mature students in the classroom. Having a broader mix of people led to a better discussion. I went back to school in 2002 and what a difference. The professors' opinions were not to be questioned, discussions were more like consensus building, and the professors seemed intent on developing a following among the students.
