Having grown up and lived the first 28 years of my life just southeast Houston I can tell you events like this aren't as big of a deal to the people living there as they are to the outside world. It's not like the people living down there aren't aware that this type thing happens. If you live anywhere along the coast anywhere on the Gulf of Mexico or the southeast coast of the Atlantic Ocean you can expect this sort thing.
