Default Anyone going to the Tenkara fishing event at Estes Park on the 16th?

Tenkara is a simplified fly-fishing technique from Japan, using just a very flexible rod and line. It is targeted to mountain streams, and does not require a mortgage payment each to Orvis & Patagonia.

I have no idea what to expect from this event, but it is fairly close and not expensive.

I won't be there but tenkara has always been interesting to me. Simple. I like that.

We humans often make fishing more complicated than it really needs to be.

I had to look up what tenkara was about, and used a similar style as a kid with standard fly rod and wet flies keeping the tippet off the surface working eddies and currents in small pools. Did something similar with salmon eggs and an egg hook, letting the egg drift near the surface.

I don't think I'd like gripping such a tiny rod handle all day. Ultralight gear is a blast, whether you're using flies or a tiny spinning rod.

I won't be there as it is a little bit out of my range but it sounds fun. I have several friends who are into it and have let me try their gear. Drifting a salmon egg over a pool in a stream and seeing a big ol' Brown come up and snatch that thing is sure exciting.

I've done Tenkara style fly fishing a couple times, it's really fun. Need to do it more. I'd like to get up to the event, just too much to do unfortunately right now. If you're one of the types that like to fish though, go check it out.

So.. It's just fishing a tight creek and calling it something fancy?

...with ultralight gear. That's what I took from it. I used a tippet that was almost the length of the fly rod and used a similar approach in certain situations. I never knew I was doing something 'fancy'.

It's basically fly fishing with a short piece of line and a leader tied to the top of the rod. No reel.

I have been wanting a setup for a while. I will try to attend.

Well, I do that all the time on Boulder Creek.. short 4 weight rod, basically have two feet of line out on my fly rod with your standard leader and tippet for Boulder Creek and flip my line/fly into pockets.. Not really anything new per say..
