I took the money, longer contract and work from home.

I did explain to the other company that since I had not even finished signing the offer letter, that I was taking the other offer.

They asked if it was just about the money, I told them no, that it was a longer term contract and no commute.

The sad part is that job started Monday, the job I took will take about 2 weeks for the background check, ID badge and equipment to arrive.

But I do have outstanding work I can do to pay the bills till then

Well, you said you were filling out the background check for job #1. You could have just put down that you have a felony conviction for kid napping and child molestation and are wearing an ankle monitor, and walked out the door . Problem solved.

A 3 month contract is nothing more than surge support.

The three month contract was to engineer a solution for deploying product that the customer is selling to other customers.

I would have had to milk it to get 3 months.

As has been said, you made the right choice.

As part owner of a business, owner/only employee of a second business, and part time contractor/consultant to 2 other companies, I can tell you that it is on you to take care of yourself with 95+% of all companies out there.

Look out for yourself. It's business. You don't owe the company anything beyond what is in the contract.
