Whatever you buy, put a large transmission fluid cooler on it. 90% of transmission problems are due to fluid overheating.

I was quite worried about this myself - but couldn’t really find anyone enthusiastic to do this job between dealer, a couple of independent trans shops, and an independent toyota place. Yeah, I could do it myself, but didn’t feel it and it has been a long time since I’ve done that work. Trans place said if I actually noted heat, he’d be happy to talk more but really thought I should just drive it first with the TRD cooler.

I run a scangauge on it, however, with 2 OBD trans temps, and while it runs higher than I’d have anticipated (180-190, basically following coolant temp), even putting a load on it in the mtns provides minimal temp increase from there. So, while I expected 150 around town with towing in the 210-220 range, I’ve never really seen 225, and anywhere near 220 is for minutes at most.

If you are truly concerned, go MT. . My CTD and 13 Taco were (and FJ is), and I wish I’d done that, but anticipated my wife driving it more than she does now, but she used it a lot when we got it. Towing with an auto sucks, IMHO, no matter which one it is.
    Obviously not a golfer.
