I would be extremely interested in this job if I can physically work (and located near north Denver area). I know the business/market (top 15 millwork to customer cabinet companies in CO) and the general partners. Not to mention chemical coating companies to solid surface/eng stone/granite.
I actually almost bought a 15k+ sqft company near Mead 6 years ago (no, not the one in Erie which was on sale 8 yrs ago), but the term was to keep the owner on my payroll for 24month.

    Bear,

I'm in the same spot.. I'm over my current job and plan to leave.. while I would like to line something up before hand, I don't think it's going to happen as I'll never get to make an interview.. I can't even schedule a dental appointment and keep it. I think once I get back from my couple days off for Turkey, I'm turning in my 2 week notice.. just want to run it passed a few old wise people first.

I have no idea what I want to do. Just is what it is.. Financially I'm ok.. I'd like to find something that allows me to get back into school and make a living, just not sure what. I have a few ideas, and I've started looking, but something totally different wouldn't be that bad either.

Where is your place? I'm kind of limited to the Springs. I don't have the licenses anymore but I used to certified on 10 speeds, big rigs, and cats (all varieties, plus speed loaders, etc). It's been a while, but I could pick it back up me thinks.

Ugh, limited to the Springs. Wonder if there are any companies like that in the Springs...

Even though I was able to take entire mornings or afternoons off with my other job it was rare I could plan for it & actually utilize that time for something I wanted/needed to do since it was largely last minute. The new job has flex hours too so if I want to come in an hour early or work through lunch & leave an hour or two early... No problem. Hell, I can work 12hrs on a Tuesday & a half day on Friday. You get the picture.

Look for it man. Your perfect career is out there somewhere just waiting for you. Don't be afraid to go find it!
I thought my perfect career was teaching, but after a decade or so... I'm not sure sure anymore. I am looking around.

In woodland park? That may be do-able... could I send you a PM and ask some questions? IE. what knowledge base would I need, skills, tools, times, pay, etc?

That's funny you ask. I went from a poor Title 1 public school to an extremely well funded Charter school.... I would take the Title 1 school back....

Yeah, Sorry. If I could get the wife to move, I'd probably head back to Texas anyways.

It a real racket.

In the Springs, Sec+ would be the way to go to break into IT, especially with little to no experience. Sec+ in combo w/ Secret = at least a Service Desk position which would pay better than private sector low-mid analyst/engineer for the area.
I have no idea what you just said... guess I'm out...

What are your expectations for a new career? Once you consider those questions , then look at jobs/ careers that will get you there.

AND............... what age bracket you fall in, once one hits the late 40's it may be hard to break in to a new career.
How hard do I want to work? As hard as needed to get the job done.
What physical condition do I feel like I'm in? I have my problems (and excuses) due to a serious car wreck, but if a job needs to be done. I'll get it done. I'm stronger than I look. My mental toughness is what I work on. However, I know I won't be climbing any 14'ers or running a marathon anytime soon.
How far you willing to travel? That's the kicker... Married to a succesful wife who's business, family, and kids are here. Will not relocate. I can commute and all that jazz but it would have to financially make sense in order to do that... currently some of the jobs would not meet that criteria. I DID commute 2 hours one way for 6 years though at my last job. It was worth it.
Benefits are nice, but not a deal breaker.
My expectations for a new career? ... to just be content in doing a job well done. Currently teaching, I feel battered from all sides and am not happy when I get home.
Age bracket - not quite 40 yet, still have a few years. I don't know if I'm going through a mid-life crisis early or if I'm just not supposed to live past 65?... HA!

The schedule sucks. it's a dupont shift schedule. BUT you get 2, 3 day weekends a month AND 1 whole week off per month. air monitoring jobs in the lab (through battelle) start off at around $25/hr for around $65k

Here's a breakdown of the schedule:
    Week 1 Nights MTWT
Week 2 Days MTW Nights FSS
    Week 3 Days TFSS
    Week 4 Off

Air monitoring is constantly hiring due to turnover (mostly people who can't handle the schedule) must have a clean background.
I have no background check issues. I've always been the good kid, ha. This is intriguing me, need to find more info on the shift stuff. I am a musician and sometimes do have gigs no nights... are they generally ok with having to get coverage for a night or two out of the month?

There will be a apprentice level electrical position opening up in the metro area working for the DOT in the traffic signal field. If interested, PM me and I will get you the information to you when it comes open.

Sorry, It’s not a “get someone to cover for you” sort of job. The shift is the shift. You do get PTO, but I’d recommend saving it for illness/ injury because there’s no sick time.

If you try and follow a dream, or make a hobby a job, all you'll end up doing is limiting your available options and ruining your hobby. You should be as open minded as possible and set high income goals for yourself. A thread like this is a great place to start because it draws on people outside of your immediate circle of friends for employment ideas, and that's what you need. Don't worry so much about what you think you want to do, worry about what you think you can do, and avoid things that you already know you don't want to do.

Have a little talk with yourself and think back to every single job you've ever had, no matter how mundane or low paying it was, and decided what you liked and disliked about each position. Figure out what your favorite job has been, and why. Not because you're going to find that job again, but you want to have an idea of which attributes of that job meshed best with your personality. Even at this point, be careful to not narrow the field of things you're looking for, just be aware of the attributes so you'll recognize them when looking.

I think I'd reach out to as many people as you can, and find out what they do for a living, and how they arrived at their position. Also, look for people who aren't always complaining about things. I've found that many people are dissatisfied with stuff in their life, but they're unwilling to risk a change, so they go onto the internet and bitch about everything they can, or have a general bad attitude in life. Avoid advice from these people because what ever they are doing clearly isn't working.

Final thought is that it's okay to pursue money. You can strive to make as much money as possible and still be a good person at the same time. You don't have to sell your soul, push other people down to help you to the top, or even work a million hours to make a lot of money, you just need to discover those positions that pay well and fit your needs. Good luck.

I should add that "a lot" of money, is completely relative. If you're like me and have never had a job that is considered well paying, then "a lot" for you may be less than others would consider. Don't worry about that, because your goal is to satisfy yourself, and not to impress others. The job for you is out there, you just need to keep every option open to find it.

Here is a Tim Ferriss interview of Mike Rowe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2omFKcCmX-o
It's long (2 hours and 20 minutes), so I suggest you put it on in the background while you do something else. Tim Ferriss interviews successful people and deconstructs what makes them successful. This isn't like a self help thing, it's just two guys talking about their experiences and there is some enlightening stuff in here. Check it out. Fast forward to 3 minutes to skip all ads, interview starts at 5:30ish. Tim Ferriss is the creator of The Four Hour Work Week and I believe he's all about making as much money, with as little time working as possible, and Mike Rowe has experienced over 300 jobs.

Skip to 1:03 for the part where Mike Rowe addresses following your passion for a job.

Been working a variation of that schedule for almost 17 years now!! Love it...
