Did you read the article? The cop's 14-year-old son was there. He could have been shot.

Considering the circumstances, I'd say a bottle of KY likely hammered it home (see what I did there?) to this asshole that shot at the cop, more than the trial did.

This seems like the opposite problem of a knife or pair of scissors in a package which needs a knife or pair of scissors to open.

Oh, she gets it and so do I.

Too many folks these days doing whatever the hell they like, regardless of how it affects others. The punk had no concern for anyone other than himself and was willing to take the lives of others (thankfully that wasn't the result in this situation). This officers gesture make a clear statement to the convict and the public that incarceration by itself is the least of is punks problems - the penalty will bite you in the ass (or pound you...). What could have resulted in a 30 day stay in County jail was turned into a prolonged stay in prison with all of the unsavory activities it entails. Maybe it will get the next guy to consider that it's far worse in prison than simply having your movements restricted. Maybe, just maybe, the next guy will stop short of escalating an encounter.

    I applaud the officer.

Well, why don't you 'splain it to me, Lucy. If this off-duty cop had just watched this scab continue on his merry criminal way, you can bet there'd be reprisals once it came to light that the officer could have stopped him. The article doesn't give details as far as how the kid was beng a reckless driver, but I would think it was something that was enough to make the officer stop from taking his son to school and say to himself, "I'd better stop this guy, before he kills someone." As far as I know, law enforcement may work on shifts, but it's a full-time job. So he attempts to stop the driver, who bails out of his car and SHOOTS the cop, three times. I'm not sure why the officer was wearing his ballistic vest (that said "POLICE" on it) but I'm sure his family and friends were incredibly thankful for the foresight. The driver stole another car and barricaded himself in a house, where he then shot the officer in question THREE more times (that would be six times, in total) before they apprehended him.

The 19-year old had a fight with his girlfriend, grabbed a gun and shot it off a few times before saying that "the day may be [his] last one," before jumping into his car and driving it erratically.

Are you expecting police officers to emulate Judge Dredd? They're human. Are you getting that fact?
