    Default Shooting in National Forests

    Hey guys,

Looking at going into the mountains to do some shooting (nothing crazy just some handguns this time) and was wondering if anyone has any insights on where to go. I am looking at either Pike or Arapahoe forests and I've called a few of the ranger stations and no one seems to know anything. Not sure if they just don't want anyone shooting or if they are really just clueless. Any insight would be appreciated.

There are a few designated shooting areas in Pike NF. The one that is most easily accessible is off of CR 126 about 5 miles South of the town of Buffalo Creek.

There's also Harris Park between Pine Junction and Bailey but that's more difficult to get to. Harris Park is much nicer though.

Baker Draw in the Pawnee grasslands is a very nice range if you don't mind the drive (it's ~80 miles from Denver.)

Follow the rules for dispersed shooting in the NF, please! I drive and hike FS roads, and there's so much evidence of illegal shooting. If I have the time, I pick up what I can just so the place doesn't look like a dump. If I'm hiking, I can fill up both cargo pockets without picking up everything I see.

I do the same, I hate when people just leave it looking like a dump. Also safety is the most important that's why I was asking not just going

Just a quick note; the CR126 Buffalo Creek one is usually closed this time of year because of Christmas tree cutting.

When I leave the forest, I leave with as much trash as i can carry out. And there's always more.

This is increasingly what I find every damn time I visit even a remote public access area. It's really disappointing.
