My next door neighbor is Czech, and my wife works with a doctor, her and her husband are both also Czech. They all grew up under Communism in Czechoslovakia, before it became The Czech Republic, and they don't have anything good to say about it. They were none too fond of Obama either.

Have a friend from Kazakhstan, who had been a conscript in the Soviet Army. One of the first things he did when he came here was to buy a gun. Then a car. Then a house. He's realizing the American dream. He can't believe the rights that some Americans are willing to give up for the promise of safety.

I wish technology solved people issues. It seems to just reveal them.

My dad grew up in Hungary during the communist rule, fleeing after the failed revolution in 1956. He tells many stories similar to those in the above article. He also talks about all the informants everywhere, people who wanted to get a leg up in the party so they agreed to spy on their neighbors, coworkers, fellow students, etc. You always had to watch what you said or it'd be reported. People getting thrown into prison for "disloyalty" was a regular thing. The cell phones and NSA we have now would have been the communists' wet dream. Yet maddeningly he is a die-hard liberal. Not even a classic liberal, but a progressive. It's amazing to me that they were able to brainwash him in spite of his experiences.
