That's a good question, and I wondered what exactly was in the texts. My guess is that they did it for movie continuity/segue for new generations of both movie-goers and for character actors.

I didn't see the 'grrrrl' power that has been alluded to in the thread. The women in charge made many, many illogical and grievous errors on so many occurancs that it made me wonder if everyone with a XX chromosome is operating on "women don't have brains, they have feelz," trope.

Rey knew how to defend herself pretty well with a staff. Martial arts were likely a requirement for her survival, so I'm not too surprised that someone would instinctively know what to do when forced to use a shorter stick (aka light saber).

Mostly enjoyed it, though IV and V are my favorites. My biggest disappointment was with Luke and how his character was written. Evidently Mark Hamill felt the same. Hell Obi-wan was more badass in “A New Hope”.

Haven't seen the new one yet, but I did buy some tickets to see the first movie with a live orchestra soundtrack...it might be a really cool experience. It's in March up at the First Bank Center....22nd/24th I think.

I've clearly read far too many of the books. IMHO, the book story arc would have made a much better series of movies. Jacen Solo becomes a much better Sith Lord than Kylo Ren will ever be, Jaina Solo or Tahiri Veila would have made a better female lead with more depth, along with Mara Jade... I could go on, but then the true depth of my geekiness would be exposed.

When they announced they were going to make 7-9 I was excited... especially at the potential of Thrawn being brought to the big screen. Then my hopes were dashed by the complete disregard of the expanded universe as we know it.

This review from a bunch of guys who look like they smell like the inside of a Blockbuster Video store circa 1997 pretty much sums it up.
