Trump wasn't supposed to win. Hillary was. And if she did, all of this would have been washed away and they would have went on with their merry lives.

He did win, so they had to keep going deeper. They kept digging and searching in hopes they could find something, or make it appear as if there was something, to delegitimize Trump before he could delegitimize them.
