At this point in time, that sort of attitude is being wantonly naive. If the smith in question were on the up & up then he would have at least maintained communication.

OP: It's long past the point where you need to wake up and realize the nice guy approach isn't working and this is now beyond a shadow of a doubt a stolen firearm. You need to shit or get off the pot - report this to law enforcement or resign yourself that the gun is forever gone and drop it.
