    Having spoken to Leslie on the phone, I think it's unlikely. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy, just trying to get his gun back. He seems unwilling to see the possibility that the smith in question might not be on the up and up.

    At this point in time, that sort of attitude is being wantonly naive. If the smith in question were on the up & up then he would have at least maintained communication.

    OP: It's long past the point where you need to wake up and realize the nice guy approach isn't working and this is now beyond a shadow of a doubt a stolen firearm. You need to shit or get off the pot - report this to law enforcement or resign yourself that the gun is forever gone and drop it.

    While i commend your assistance, if he doesn't want to get LE involved at this point in the game. There's really nothing a letter will do to get this deadbeat FFL issue resolved.
