Probably counterproductive but for me a live match is my practice.

Familiarize yourself with the rules, be familiar with the safe and proficient operation of your weapons, and show up to a match and have fun.

    This.

Most of the matches I have been at will give first timers a huge time penalty so they cannot be in the running for placing, and can focus on learning the rules, the safety requirements, etc.

It'd be worth finding a match near you, and getting involved. Go watch one first if you would rather. You can get an idea of the holsters, gear, PPE, etc that guys bring for these matches, and then go from there.
Most matches are always looking for volunteers to help with taping, resetting a stage, etc. So you would be most welcome to go watch and learn, or you can go to shoot and start by focusing on learning the requirements.

Naw ... not counterproductive at all. Best training for competitive shooting is just to get out there and do it.

You'll find that the people you'll meet at the match are every bit as helpful as an instructor would be.
