As many have said, it all depends on purpose of the rifle. All of my AR's are for short distances. On my SBR, I run a Trijicon MRO in a QR mount so I can move it from rifle to rifle. . On my 16" rifle I have a Vortex Strikefire II. I have a Vortex 3x Magnifier on a swing-out QR mount that sits in my rifle bag, so if I want the option, I have it for either platform.

If I could afford it, I'd buy an ACOG for my 16" rifle.

I've considered trying a Prism red dot 3x or 4x, but just chose to spend money on other things.

Way back when I had an EoTech 512 on my original Bushmaster (back when it was great - not a Remington AR), and to this day, I think that is probably still my favorite red dot sight for the AR platform. I will probably own one again some day.

    My Feedback

Ultima Ratio Regum - the final argument of kings.

Thanks for the discussion about advice on optics. Wearing glasses that are progressive is a pain when using my optics and one reason I had originally mentioned a magnifier. In my particular case, the magnifier has been helpful, until I look-up without my glasses. I have jotted down everyone’s suggestions and look at each. Thanks again for the discussion.

What do people think about the Sig Romeo 5 for a defensive/serious use rifle optic? I’ve seen some impressive torture tests.

I've been using a 1-6 for a few years now and LOVE it. Put it on my 6.5 Grendel and killed my antelope at 278 yards and a mule deer at 35 yards. It's back on my 556, and I don't have any plans of replacing it. I'm running the primary arms. It may be a little slower than a red dot up close, but I don't have any problems hitting 10" steel at 500 yards on 6x.

I don't think I'll every buy another scope without an illuminated reticle. I really like the Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4x IR. It enables accurate shooting at targets in low light or in the dark with a bright gun light. Think raccoon at 100 yards in the dark with a 500 lumen light. It's like a poor man's infrared or thermal scope.
