    Didn't have to.

    If that phone was in his pocket when he dressed up to make the FedEx drops, it pinged every tower en route, there, and back.

    Imagine the time/location narrowed it to a few dozen suspects at each drop and a single cross-check left them one suspect who stood out. The phone could have led them back to the motel too.
