    Default American Enfield M1917 question

my kid bought an M1917 rifle from Cabelas a couple months back. One thing I just noticed that is concerning is I question the safety.
If I open and close the bolt, flip the safety on and pull on the trigger the gun "fires", or the gun goes "click" anyway. It sure sounds like it would fire, its a pretty robust "CLICK". I haven't tried it at the range with live ammo.
Sometimes, safety on and trigger pulled, the safety flips forward and again the gun would appear to fire.

The gun is 100 years old, a mixmaster, but in decent shape. I don't mind throwing some replacement parts at it. I assume cocking piece, safety lever and safety plunger would do the trick?

If anyone has any insight please share.
