Rattlesnake was coming right for me.
I was minding my own business heading down hwy 14, and out of the corner of my eye, about 3/8 of a mile off the road, under a piece of metal, I spotted this rattlesnake. Of course I had to defend myself.
I did actually see a ground squirrel, as well as some a-hole antelope. If that wasn't a ground squirrel, I'm about to have a private prairie dog colony.

You forget about the jack rabbit?
I didn't have to defend myself from those jack rabbits.

I've never seen them any bigger out there. That's the fifth or sixth one I've taken care of now.

Grew up in TX. They were plentiful.
My Grandmother was rather proficient with a shotgun. Grandparents were ranchers. I came across one at the back fence. Ran to the house, where she was making lunch. I was probably more gesturing than communicating. She wiped off her hands and walked toward the back door. On the way out, she picked up the shotgun (deer rifle behind the front door and shotgun behind the back). She made the rattler jump about 2' at 20 yards. Said "don't go over there for a few days" and went back to making lunch.
A couple of days later, I went out to see if it was still there. Yep, dead as a door nail.

I'm surprised it was still there a few days later.

So was I.
