Dickson County Deputy Daniel Baker was murdered on Wednesday morning.

Dickson County, TN – The mother of Dickson County Sergeant Daniel Baker identified her son as the deputy murdered Wednesday morning.



The murdered hero's mother released a statement to FOX 17.

“I am unable to communicate verbally at this time. My son was a kind, compassionate young man. He loved his family, and adored his wife and daughter. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He served his country in the Marines and came home to serve his community. He was a faithful servant to all. Please allow our family to process this tragedy," Sergeant Baker's mother said in the statement to FOX 17.



According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the incident happened when Sergeant Baker, 32, responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at around 7 a.m.



After Sergeant Baker responded, dispatch was unable to reach him.



A search was launched for Sergeant Baker and an officer located him deceased with a gunshot wound in his patrol car near the boundary line between Dickson and Hickman counties, far from where the suspicious vehicle was reported.



The sergeant was fatally shot in the gunfight.



The suspect, identified from video evidence as Steven Wiggins, fled the scene, and a massive manhunt is now underway the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office said.



A Blue Alert has been issued in the area, with residents getting phone notifications and highway readerboards broadcasting the suspect info.



A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of Wiggins.

Sergeant Daniel Baker was shot and killed while responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of Sam Vineyard Road and Tidwell Switch Road.

Dispatchers lost contact with Sergeant Baker after he arrived at the scene and other officers were sent to make contact with him. His vehicle was tracked by GPS and located several miles away by an officer from another agency. His body was located inside of the vehicle.

The subject who shot him was identified and remains at large.

Sergeant Baker was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office for 10 years. He is survived by his wife, children, and family including his father and stepbrother who serve as law enforcement officers with the Spring Hill Police Department
