I'm not understanding the connotation here. On top we have a bunch of preppy college kids protesting war and getting shot by the government for it, and on the bottom we have a WW1-interwar era Soviet militia?

Many modern liberal activists act like they are peace love and tolerance like the kids protesting in the Vietnam era. But they don't actually want peace love and tolerance like those folks in the top picture. What the current crop of radical left activists want is to be more like the bottom picture. No more peace and flowers...many of them believe it's time for violence and force. They HATE people like us.
