Default U.S. states make last-minute legal bid to halt 3-D online guns

U.S. states make last-minute legal bid to halt 3-D online guns

July 30 (Reuters) - Several U.S. states on Monday said they would jointly sue the Trump administration for allowing the public to download blueprints for 3-D printable guns in a last-ditch effort to block the designs from becoming available on Wednesday.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a news conference in Seattle that the states will ask a federal judge to issue a restraining order and an injunction to block the publication of the designs, which they say would allow criminals easy access to weapons.

Along with Washington state, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Oregon, Maryland and the District of Columbia are working on finalizing the lawsuit and plan on filing it later on Monday, Ferguson said.

At issue is a June settlement between the U.S. government and Texas-based Defense Distributed company that will allow it to legally publish gun blueprints online. Defense Distributed, which had challenged an earlier government ban as a violation of its First and Second Amendment rights, says on its website that it plans to release the plans by Aug. 1.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump failed to explain why it settled the case and allowed the publication of the blueprints, Ferguson said.

The U.S. State Department had previously banned the blueprints as a national security risk and a violation of arms trafficking regulations. As recently as April, the government in court filings argued downloadable guns would allow extremist groups and criminals abroad unfettered access to arms.

The State Department and Justice Department, which represented the government in the case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the announcement of the lawsuit.

"Our Congress has carefully crafted laws to protect us and, in one moment, without any consultation with experts, the administration undoes it," Washington state's Ferguson said.

The government failed to study the impact of its decision and did not consult with other agencies before settling, making its actions "arbitrary and capricious" in violation of federal law, Ferguson said. He said the settlement violated states' rights to regulate firearms.

Gun control groups on Friday failed to convince a federal judge to intervene before the designs were expected to go online. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin, Texas found that the groups, including the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, lacked legal standing.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association for gun manufacturers, says concerns over 3-D printable guns are overblown because criminals are unlikely to use the expensive technology to manufacture guns. (Reporting by Tina Bellon; editing by Grant McCool)

Too much stupid to even respond to...

The files are already available, they're even being updated... just not from their server...
And it's not like they're assault weapons

ETA: more like an ILLEGAL bid, since it was determined to be constitutionally protected.... but they want to stop him anyway.

Wish willfully violating the constitution hurt... a lot.

No one show them a polymer 80 glock receiver. A pocket knife and <30 minutes of whittling is all it took to make a ghost gun more likely to be used in a crime than any printable AR.

But the thread about bolt receivers being firearms has me wondering if the ATF has been instructed to slowly regulate essential parts needed to finish a ghost reciever... hmmm...

They have completely stalled all forward movement of an new 80% items at this point. (SS80 being among them).

They are going to do their damndest to "stop this even loophole", even if it means breaking the law to do it.

Hence my interest in the DD settlement and it's ramifications for the .50 Upper thread.

Heard on the news this morning that a judge halted the publication of the designs. All kinds of handwringing about undetectable plastic guns being used in crimes, in airports, etc.

Vice news had a report last night with a 3d print enthusiast and he printed the gun. The prints are out there, so this stopped nothing. Just made a few liberal DAs pound their chests...

These idiots act like the Internet stops as the US border. It's a data file, and if the laws can't stop the pedophiles and all of their traffic they aren't going to stop these files coming from overseas servers.

My take away from that article is that the real reason they're trying to fight this is it's really prolific if there's a all-out gun ban... they want to ban all guns, and they know this will be an issue if they get their wish.

Nothing creates more crime than more laws. Legislators are the greatest creators of criminals.

If most people died due to drowning, lawyers would outlaw liquids.

Someone really should show politicians a couple videos of Peshawar tribesmen making AKs out of scrap metal.

The higher percentage of college degrees we have as a country, the lower percentage of the population will be able to make things.
