COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An officer in Colorado was critically wounded after police exchanged gunfire with a suspect.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said the shooting happened early Thursday morning after police responded to reports of multiple shots fired, KDVR reported. When police arrived at the scene, an armed suspect shot at officers, who returned fire.
Officer Cem Duzel, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot and critically wounded during the exchange of gunfire. He was rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery.


the suspect was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not released the suspect’s name.
"This has been an extremely difficult year with law enforcement officers being hurt or killed, particularly in our region," Chief Pete Carey told reporters. "Please keep Officer Duzel, his family, and the Colorado Springs Police Department in your thoughts and prayers."
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting. Additional information about the shooting has not been released.
