Default CO Springs Officer in Critical Condition after shooting

    By PoliceOne Staff
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An officer in Colorado was critically wounded after police exchanged gunfire with a suspect.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said the shooting happened early Thursday morning after police responded to reports of multiple shots fired, KDVR reported. When police arrived at the scene, an armed suspect shot at officers, who returned fire.
Officer Cem Duzel, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot and critically wounded during the exchange of gunfire. He was rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery.

the suspect was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not released the suspect’s name.
"This has been an extremely difficult year with law enforcement officers being hurt or killed, particularly in our region," Chief Pete Carey told reporters. "Please keep Officer Duzel, his family, and the Colorado Springs Police Department in your thoughts and prayers."
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting. Additional information about the shooting has not been released.

NOTE: CSPD put out a notice on Nextdoor to beware of charity scams. Apparently nothing has been set up for the officer (yet) so be wary of people soliciting donations.

This should almost be stated each time a major incident or LODD occurs. If you would like to donate contact the PIO for that department or an FOP organization and they can guide you in the right direction. Additionally, for tax reasons, departments are not fans of go fund me pages. Besides fraud they can cost the family a large tax bill.

The suspected gunman in custody in Thursday's shooting of a Colorado Springs police officer was a frequent customer for local cops who was out on the town on conditions of bail.

Karrar Al Khammasi had at least nine contacts with police over nearly five years in the Pikes Peak region, and he spent nearly two of those years behind bars in county and state lockups, court records show.

The 31-year-old Iraqi immigrant picked up his first charge for drunken driving in 2013 and escalated to a case that police described as "criminal extortion" that landed him on parole for felony trespassing, court records show. His status as an Iraqi immigrant was confirmed by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, though it was unclear Friday what type of visa he used to enter the United States.

I too wish the officer a speedy and full recovery.

However, there is no need to raise money for medical expenses. The City's workers' compensation coverage will pay for all hospital, surgical, medical treatment, and rehab from dollar one with no deductibles or co-pays and no maximum limit on the total amount of medical payments. Depending on the City's agreement with the police union, the officer might also be paid his full wages for a considerable period of time if he remains unable to work. This is known as "salary continuation". After salary continuation expires and he is still unable to work, he can receive up to $987 per week in temporary disability benefits that are not subject to income taxes.

I always wondered why anyone would contribute to a GoFundMe for a police officer, for the above reasons, but never asked out loud because people get mad if you question things having to do with the police.
