Coating cast bullets

So who is coating their own cast bullets? I’ve coated a few hundred now using the HiTek coating, and I’ve got a couple pounds of powder coating coming to try that too. I like coated bullets, less smoke, no bullet lube build up in seating dies, less lead on fingers when reloading. Anyone else doing the same?

I use the cheap red powder coat from Harbor Freight.

Works just fine, is cheap and readily available, and pretty simple.

We have coated thousands with the harbor freight powder. I haven't seen any ill effects yet. Accuracy seems to still be better than I can shoot. All have been pistol bullets.

Once my powder arrives this week I am going to try the shake n bake with air soft BBs in the container. I’ve already got a convection oven I was using for HiTek coating. What time and temp are you guys baking the powder at?

The shake n bake method does work, but it annoys me to have to make sure I get the airsoft bb's out before I bake.

I started using an idea I saw on youtube, which is preheat the bullets to 140° for about 4-5 minutes, then drop them in the powder, shake them around, and then put them on the tray.

The preheated bullets collect enough powder without having to shake/tumble for long enough to create static, so it makes it a little faster.

ETA: Cook times.

I use a cheapy walmart convection toaster oven (probably similar to what you have) and cook them for 20 minutes at 400°.

Elvis Ammo on youtube has a lower temp bulk method that seems to work well, I just did a very large batch using his instructions, it was fairly quick and easy.

No preheat, lower temp, just pile the boolits in there, and dump them out when done

I haven't tried a big-batch bake. I am skeptical about there being a lack of flaws at the contact points. How do the bullets look when they come out?

As for time and temp, I too have been doing 20 minutes at 400. I am very new to the process as well though.

They looked real good, I was a skeptic as well
