Default Firearms in car on CU/UCCS property?

I've searched and read everything I could get my eyes on on the matter but nothing completely clarifies this question. I know that CCW is not allowed on CU/UCCS property but what about leaving it in your car while on campus property?

    From RMGO:

    -School, college, or university grounds.
18-12-105.5. Unlawfully carrying a weapon - unlawful possession of weapons - school, college, or university grounds.
    (1) A person commits a class 6 felony if such person knowingly and unlawfully and without legal authority carries, brings, or has in such person's possession a deadly weapon as defined in section 18-1-901 (3) (e) in or on the real estate and all improvements erected thereon of any public or private elementary, middle, junior high, high, or vocational school or any public or private college, university, or seminary, except for the purpose of presenting an authorized public demonstration or exhibition pursuant to instruction in conjunction with an organized school or class, for the purpose of carrying out the necessary duties and functions of an employee of an educational institution that require the use of a deadly weapon, or for the purpose of participation in an authorized extracurricular activity or on an athletic team.
    (3) It shall not be an offense under this section if:
    (a) The weapon is unloaded and remains inside a motor vehicle while upon the real estate of any public or private college, university, or seminary; or...

The red text basically says that it's ok to have firearms on campus as long as they are unloaded and in one's vehicle. However, according to the CU Regents:

"NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the possession of the firearms, explosives, or other dangerous or illegal weapons on or within any University of Colorado campus, leased building, other area under the jurisdiction of the local campus police department or areas where such possession interferes with the learning and working environment is prohibited."

If you leave it in your car, who is going to even know about it?

The law says concealed carry on public college campuses is legal. CU rules/regs prohibit firearms.

CU's policy has been challenged in court and the court upheld their policy even though it conflicts with state law.

I'll call the chief at UCCS today and find out. He's pro gun so I suspect he won't care. I'll let you know soon.

UCCS bylaw just states "Where it interferes with learning, etc..." Having an unloaded firearm in your car that no one knows about it not interferring with learning, etc...

    my two cents.

Always advisable to call those in charge and just ask.

Thanks Roger. Is it Jim Spice? If it is, he may be pro gun but he is anti ccw on campus. I would be a little skeptical if the response returned was negative.

These are the particulars of the suit brought by the 3 students against the CU Board of Regents and the chiefs of police for the respective campuses. The complaint notes that the University policy prohibits not only concealed carry with a permit in violation of state law, but also forbids possession in any university building (dorms) or in private vehicles parked on university property. To the best of my knowledge, this has yet to be heard by the court.

CCW is prohibited on public k-12 schools but they are allowed in your vehicle. you have to take an extra step and make sure it is in a compartment in your car, as well as the vehicle has to be locked.

I would think that would apply to the school. they can't control your personal property. now if you are in dorms, they can control that even though you rent it, but if the car is yours you have every right to keep whatever you like in there as long as you are legal to own it.
All I have in this world is my balls and my word and I don't break em for no one.
