Interesting article (careful...it's very anti-gun) in "America - The National Catholic Weekly":

This excerpt of a few quotes by Kristen Rand of the Violence Policy Center really irritated me (emphasis is mine in bold):

Kristen Rand, legislative director at the nonprofit Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., pointed out to America that such weapons all come from jurisdictions without strong laws like Chicago’s. “You can’t buy a handgun in Chicago or the District of Columbia legally, so traffickers go to states with weaker laws and then bring them to the cities that don’t allow their purchase.” For Ms. Rand and other gun control advocates, one of the worst aspects of a victory by those who mounted McDonald v. Chicago would be that it would remove what she called “the most effective measures to prevent handgun violence.” She observed that the Supreme Court in both Heller and now in McDonald is examining the issue solely as a question of constitutional law “and not in terms of the deadly effect on citizens of gun violence.” The court should know better than most that, as former U.S. Justice Robert H. Jackson said, “the Constitution is not a suicide pact.”

[sarcasm]Imagine the nerve of any Supreme Court justice who would examine an issue before the court in terms of constitutional law and not wild rhetoric and emotion![/sarcasm]

That's right, Ms Rand. It's not a "suicide pact". That's why the 2nd Amendment is there. So We The People can defend ourselves...not only from bad guys but from morons like you that would leave us defenseless against predators.

I hate this kind of shit. Ms. Rand is another one of the useless, liberal hand wringers who fail to understand handguns are not responsible for shooting deaths. Criminals are.

If we were to apply her logic to other areas we would find the following:

General Motors/Ford/Chrysler and their unrestricted sales of powerful, fast performance vehicles are responsible for street racing deaths. Honestly, why does anyone need a Camaro, Mustang, or Charger. These vehicles serve no "sporting" purpose and should be, at a minumum, tightly regulated or restricted to law enforcement only...

Concerned citizens group demands immediate ban of all matches, lighters and gasoline cans as these tools of destruction make it all too easy for arsonists to perpetuate their crimes. These things have no place on our streets. Diamond Match, Bic, and Eagle storage containers have innocent blood on thier hands and they and the sellers of these items are responsible for many, many, deaths in this country

These are just two equally ridiculous examples that spring to mind. I'm sure I could think of more. The one thing all "banners" fail to realize is making something illegal never makes it unavailable. No law ever causes people to act responsibly. No city anywhere in the world has ever been made safer by restrictions on the private ownership of firearms. Just ask the English, the Australians, Chicagoans, or New Yorkers.

One last point, I 've never been anyplace where I felt I needed to carry a gun more than I did when I visited Chicago.

I have a few that I trust and will leave unsupervised outside of the safe. The rest can't be trusted on their own...they stay locked up. It's for the children.

Ms. Rand's arguements use the same type of logic as the anti-hunters who tell us to get our meat at the store where "it's made".

These types of people will NEVER get it and can't understand that criminals are really and truly the bad guys that we need protection from, not law abiding citizens who simply want to protect themselves.
