Nothing they sell is any better or worse than the cheap compressed sawdust furniture sold at Walmart or Big Lots. It's just more concentrated, and better marketed. My wife, who would never want to accidentally find herself in the furniture aisle at Walmart, will drag me through the entire frigging warehouse to marvel at every pile of butt-jointed particle board with a 27 syllable Scandanavian name attached to it like it's a mid-century modern masterpiece. So that is my gripe with it.

Melamine coated particle board has it's place, and that place is in cheap utility cabinets. I don't object to composite materials, and if I bought high grade cabinets, I would have no problem with (real wood) veneer over an MDF substrate for the carcasses. But I wouldn't expect any sort of longevity out of a piece of particle board furniture, whether imported from Sweden or China. I'm typing this response right now on a Steelcase Tanker's Desk that is 13 years older than I am, and will probably be around for another 56 years after. My wife sews at a desk I made for her out of red oak and pine a decade ago. Whereas in our basement lurks the 'mission style' computer desk my wife just insisted we purchase for our son to do his homework on three years ago. The edge banding adhesive has failed and is peeling off, the veneer has worn through on the desk top, and the keyboard drawer simply disintegrated a year or so back. So I suppose what I am really bitter about is how effectively they have marketed their cheap crap to my loved ones.
Math is tough. Let's go shopping!
