Cabela's is going downhill

I don't normally buy anything from either retailer although I have picked up some gifts from the Sidney, NE store several years ago. I wish the Thornton store would do PP FFL transfers so I could do deals with you all in the Denver and southern locations, I just can't get down to that area in a timely and cost effective manner to make a deal work.

I was going to go and get some of the .22LR and 9mm ammo that was on sale and use the rebates. Then I did an internet search and found it for $20 less per case and still has a rebate and shipped free. The .22 comes out to about $0.015 per round and about $0.13 for the 9mm.

So, I did not have to go to Cabela's although they have blue jeans for $10.00 a pair. I can't decide if I want to take the drive tomorrow on the chance that they will have my size. Oh well.

Buying a lot of stuff from a major retailer in today's online world is always a bad idea. But for specific items on sale or that the price isn't much different cabelas and the like still serves a purpose. I still have their card mainly because I will use the points to buy small items from time to time like a grip, sling, etc. Sometimes they have sales that make it worth it. I could get a cash back card that in the end is probably better but I just dont care that much. Over the course of a year it's about a $100 difference and this gives me an excuse to use "free" money on gun or backpacking stuff that the wife doesnt argue with me on. Frankly I would still use the rei card instead if they weren't obvious communist leftists.

Cabelas means nothing to me anymore. Prices are high, their apparel selection is now geared towards the suburbanites (Northface, Columbia), and their gun counter is comical at best.

I have a bunch of their 'Roughneck' line of clothing. Heavy duty button-up shirts made of thick rip-stop canvas and nylon. They took a beating and were easy to clean up. Stopped seeing that line not that long after the BassPro takeover was announced. Duluth offers similar stuff, but at about twice the price. Kind of sad, but a familiar cycle. I remember when Eddie Bauer was better known for high-durability coats and sporting goods than middle-aged yuppie apparel.

I kind of feel like if you are married to a store for a long time, while other people go most their lives with never even shopping there, it's a good thing when you get a divorce.

Never been in a Cabellas except for their original giant store. Went to Bass Pro once here. Had a gift card.

I was looking for a Springfield 911 and was at the gun counter and asked if they had them yet. The guy looks at me and in a very condescending voice said " you must be wanting a 1911, we have so many you can't miss them" I said no sir I am asking if you have a new model 380 made by Springfield called the 911, he said they do not make such a firearm and I may want to go elsewhere to look for a gun. So I did, it has been a great little addition.

Depending on who you get Sportsman's is much the same. Not just Cabela's, most retail sales people don't know much about what they're selling. People are more than happy to look it up. My visits to the south Cabela's have all been meh. Even with money burning a hole in my pocket couldn't find anything exciting.

Sportsman's is much better than Cabela's, and usually beats the smaller gun stores on gun prices.

Got to agree with that. I have never had a bad experience at the gun counter at sportsman’s. I prefer them depending on the local shops. And they are hard to beat price wise. I think they are the only place I’ve ever bought a new gun from.
