Mobile County native, Ray Sawyer, of the musical group Dr. Hook, has died.
Sawyer passed away in Daytona Beach, Fla., according to his publicist. He was born in Chickasaw in 1937.
Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show had a number of top pop hits in the 1970's. Sawyer was lead singer on "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" that went to #6 on the U.S. Pop Chart in 1972. That hit followed "Sylvia's Mother" that topped at #5 earlier that year. In the next eight years, the group would have four more top ten hits: ?Only Sixteen (1975),? "Sharing the Night Together (1978), ?When You?re in Love with a Beautiful Woman (1978),? and "Sexy Eyes (1980)."
Sawyer was a recognizable due to the eye patch and cowboy hat he wore. He lost an eye in an automobile accident in a 1967.
