I was being scarcastic when I blamed it on my wife. I thought that was pretty obvious. For those who thought I was being serious, how does one "push a button aggressively" anyway? Is that a lot like slamming a tent door when you have an argument whilst camping?
Back to the garage door topic.... Yeah it does seem as though maybe prices have gone up because I seemed to recall these panels weren't that expensive back when I did flips but I can't seem to find bargain prices deals anymore. Salvaging any of these panels by doing body work isn't an option due to actual tears where the creases are. It's not as simple as hammering out a couple of dents because the steel actually "tore" where the creases are.
I did manage to find one deal that was a 16x7 door installed for $499 with tear down and haul away of the old door. It required me completing a form with measurements and details but even with limited footwork (that I'd likely have to do if I did the work myself anyway) that's a smokin' deal from what I've seen. The only problem with this is that it is ONLY for their short panel door and not the long panel. For those that don't know the lingo this only means four squares per panel or two rectangles (double for double wide door) but they're the same otherwise. It's purely aesthetics as the doors are nearly identical in form and function otherwise. The bummer is that we have two garage doors and the single wide (actually taller though) garage door is fine but they wouldn't match. On top of that we were told that manufacturers change their process every 8-10 years so it they likely wouldn't match even if we paid extra for long panels since we built his house about 13 years ago. They are both of cheap builder's grade panels too so I don't know if I want to match the one that's still standing only to have it fail eventually too. I could say screw it and throw and short panel door in the double side even though it doesn't match the one next to it for $500 and call it a day. They're different shapes so maybe it wouldn't be as noticeable? It's something that would probably drive me nuts though.
I think it's I should use this as an opportunity to do what I really want to do and that's install two 3-layer insulated garage doors. I have a large garage and I do spend time in it in the winter so it would probably be something we would recoup a couple of bucks per month back in heating/cooling costs overall which isn't much but it's something. They would work better, look better, operate quieter and last longer overall so this is where the real investment would pay off. I won't have to worry about replacing them every decade or so if we're even here that long. The problem is I hate spending money so I'm having a hard time justifying spending a couple of grand on both doors when I have an option available to put us back to 99% of where we were (that 1% is just the difference in looks) for $500.
In an perfect world I think I'd find a really good deal on decent but not amazing insulated (R10+) doors w/o any fancy windows or details that I could just install myself. I stopped at Lowe's and the guy told me it would take about 35 days to get doors made. No thanks.
