Any shoot a Remmy 740, 742, 7400?

I have seen these on auction sites for under $200 in 30-06.
Thought about a cheaper alternative to an M1A.
I know they aren't as accurate or rugged, but I've head that you can get 2MOA.

Any 1st hand experience?

I have a 7400. While it's never hunted (moved from WA state right after I got it and haven't taken up hunting here) and I haven't fired at range from a solid rest, I have no doubts it's capable of well under 2 MOA. The shooter, on the other hand...

Great rifle. No complaints, other than the comb is kind of high for my tastes. Functions perfect.

My buddy has a 7400 that he shoots lights out. No modifications and it is very accurate. I've tried to buy it a couple of times and he always tells me to pound sand.

I owned a 740 in 30-06 years ago.

I found accuracy to be mediocre and the rifle would have some extraction problems. I didn't like the small bolt handle.

I traded without any remorse.

Thanks for the responses... anyone else.

I figure for the price it is the same as a H&R single shot. 2MOA is sufficient. Heck my CETME didn't even do that as a battle rifle.

Mags arent that expensive and you can still find cheap(er) 30-06 ammo.

I'm thinking of making it a cheap tactical with synthetic stock and ghost ring sites, maybe a holographic site.

Got anybody else's wheels turning?

I had a 30-06 7400 with synthetic stock.
Bought 10rd. (Eagle?)plastic mags-not very reliable.
Korean ball was too long to function properly. I had wanted to get some AP, but figured it would have the same issue.
Barrel could fry an egg after a 10rd. blasting. Seemed dangerous.
Never shot for accuracy at long range, but felt comfortable with its capabilities.

I have a 742 in 30-06 which the wood stock cracked, so I will be putting a synthetic on it and fixing it up for one of the kids first elk gun. I have a few thing to do so it will be a bit more accurate, but it will make a fine first rifle and something that if dropped and busted, I wont have to hurt them.
