What are some of your favorite guns that use a solid saftey and not the trigger saftey that the glock and a lot of the newer guns utilize. I think the Berretta 92 use a cocked and locked saftey.
What are some other good ones?

My only experience is with my CZ75. I don't use it enough to even remember to use the safety when I do use it. Mostly because my first, and primary hand gun is an M&P 40 compact that doesn't have a safety at all. It was what I wanted, but probably the wrong way to learn guns in hind sight.

1911 the best pistol platform you can buy.
It really doesn't matter. Pick any pistol of quality construction, Hi-points and Jennings etc don't count here, and practice. Pick one that fits your hand and feels good. Don't get wrapped up about safeties and where they are located. Then practice. Rounds down range mean more than mechanical workings.
Second, get good instruction. The way to accelerate learning how to shoot correctly and expending less ammo is getting good instruction. The better the instructor, the less ammo to get good.
I agree with SA, get what is the most comfortable in your hand. HK makes some nice ones that don't have a trigger safety. Other than that, I would look to a 1911.
