I agree with SA, get what is the most comfortable in your hand. HK makes some nice ones that don't have a trigger safety. Other than that, I would look to a 1911.

HK for lighter weight.
Sig for outstanding quality.
1911's (at least mid teir manufactures).
For an absolute crisp trigger you cannot beat a well tuned 1911.

If crisp, smooth triggers are important then it'll be hard to beat a 1911. If grip size is important then a single stack like a 1911 will be hard to beat. I like HK's and Sigs but found the grips hard to get used to.

I also found it hard to get used to the feel of a safe action trigger; however, if you're not currently spoiled by a 1911 then you may find it pretty natural to pickup a poly, safe action style pistol. I thought the SW99 and Walther 99 felt pretty good but couldn't stand the triggers on them.

I also really liked the feel of an HK P2000. I also prefer full size, steel framed pistols to help absord the recoil from the snappy 40 SW and power of the 45. But I don't carry either. If I carried though I'd roll with a compact in 9mm for better control.

A good hit with a 9mm is better than a miss with a 45, as the old saying goes.
