"A necropsy revealed the mountain lion was about 4 to 5 months old and weighed between 35 and 40 pounds when alive, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife."
Not to sound insulting but all the headlines made it sound like this guy is a superhero for fighting it of but that sounds incredibly small for a mountain lion. Almost big bobcat size. I'm sure it was still a danger at 35-40 lbs as some dogs of that size could be lethal, but imagine if it were a 200lb male! There's little chance he would have survived that encounter.
I've seen full grown mountain lions in the wild on multiple occasions and I've always been incredibly fascinated with them. I would never want to tussle with one. They are incredible animals.

24 lb kitten. Can of pepper spray would have fixed it.

It was obviously a young cat. If it was an adult he never would have killed it.
Ever met a truly feral house cat with a chip on its shoulder? A 9lb house cat can tear you up. A 35lb young lion is no joke.
