This. And... they affect people differently. There is the generally expected outcome that is the result for maybe more than half of users, but many people get a different effect. Just because a drug is supposed to one thing, keep a close eye when starting a script as it might not work that way for you or yours. Went through a raft of different meds for my daughter when she was little (genetic mental issues from bio-dad) and the variety of results was amazing. I will tell you Ritalin can be pretty scary with some kids. There is no reason to believe that adults will be any different on mood drugs.

Mucking about with brain chemistry is no joke. A good friend of mine was married to a woman with mild depression. She was a bright, motivated, successful real estate agent, as well as a great mom. Her shrink prescribed an SSRI, and the change was abrupt and alarming. Within a matter of weeks, she had lost her job, started drinking and taking other recreational drugs, had taken up with one of her former boyfriends, and pretty much abdicated any responsibility for the care of their daughter. This was after ONE course of the SSRI. They divorced within 6 months, and he got sole custody based on her growing arrest record.

Damn. I know they are no joke, but wrecking (maybe subjective, but there it is...) your life on one dose of meds is scary stuff.

Well, one course, not one dose. But still just as scary.

Holy shit. Granted, I know nothing about this, I'd wonder if that could be grounds for a law suit against the doctor and/or drug manufacturer... but I don't know how any of that would work... It just seems, at face value, that if something completely wrecked ones life in such maniacal fashion, the patient affected by it should have some kind of recourse. Unfathomable.

Nothing I ever want to mess with.

Before we had kids, the wife and I agreed we would never put our kids on any mind/behavior altering drugs unless it was life/death.

I know someone that has an appointment with a doctor to put kid on ADD drugs because he's not doing well in math. Zero effort has been made to tutor son in math. Very depressing.

    Very sad.

That child will have his mind modified for the rest of his life and maybe just needed a tutor like you said, or needs to learn mental discipline (this is a thing and I still struggle with it).

I am aware of changes in shopping, gambling, and other addictions that can be attributed to anti-depressants. It is not uncommon.
