Hey everybody! New member. Just signed up tonight. I don't have an AR yet but am looking to build one in the near future.

    Glad to meet you.

Are you aware that "assault rifles" are illegal in Denver?

    Have Fun.

Welcome to the forum. I think SA was joking, as ARs are not assault rifles.

Welcome to the forum. They are not illegal to own. You can not use them with high cap mags in the Denver city limits, but there is no where to shoot them there anyway.

    Here it is-
Cite as Revised Municipal Code (RMC), or Denver Code.-
    Sec. 38-130. Assault weapons.

This web site has all the Denve codes/laws-
    http://library2.municode.com/default...ction=whatsnew
You want - Capter 38 Article IV

Denvers definition of an assault rifle-
    (1) Assault weapon shall include all firearms with any of the following characteristics:
    a. All semiautomatic action, centerfire rifles with a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one (21) or more rounds.
    b. All semiautomatic shotguns with a folding stock or a magazine capacity of more than six (6) rounds or both.
    c. Reserved.
    d. Any firearm which has been modified to be operable as an assault weapon as defined herein.
    e. Any part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an assault weapon, including a detachable magazine with a capacity of twenty-one (21) or more rounds, or any combination of parts from which an assault weapon may be readily assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person.

    And the ban part-
    (e) Possession of assault weapons unlawful. It shall be unlawful to carry, store, keep, manufacture, sell or otherwise possess within the City and County of Denver a weapon or weapons defined herein as assault weapons, except that this subdivision shall not apply to:
The exceptions are for government people, movie props, and people that aren't residents of Denver.

These are just parts of the code but if you want I can post the whole thing if you want.

The way I read it an AR is NOT legal in Denver.

hobowh so you're interpreting it to say if you don't posess any magazines that hold 21 or more rounds you are legal.

I was told by a Denver street cop that was the way they saw it. I was also informed by a Denver detective that if a "hi cap" magazine was made for it it was illegal. I wonder which way the courts have ruled on it.

I will agree the way it is written "assault rifles" are legal as long as you don't have any "hi-cap" magazines in you possesion.

Too bad they can't respect us.

It depends on why you are in the presence of the cops in the first place. If they break into your house on a drug ring tip, then it isn't going to matter what kind of mags exist for the gun. If you are pulled over going to the range, and for some reason you tell the cop about your rifle, that will probably be handled differently.
